Gideon Mantell (1790–1852), a British physician, geologist, and paleontologist famous for his pioneering studies of dinosaurs, published this idealized geological cross-section in his book The Wonders of Geology (1838). It shows a colorful, layered diagram of Earth's crust with early 19th-century stratum names: Cambrian, Silurian, Carboniferous, Devonian, Permian, Lias (Lower Jurassic), Oolite (Upper Jurassic), Wealden (middle Cretaceous), Chalk (Upper Cretaceous), Tertiary, and Alluvium (Quaternary). The section highlights the relative positions of dinosaur-bearing formations and reflects the exciting early days of geology and paleontology.
